**GENERAL DUTIES**

**CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION**
The Graduate Center of The City University of New York (CUNY) is seeking an excellent science journalist to cover discoveries in the sciences and social sciences made by faculty, student, and alumni researchers who are advancing knowledge of the natural world. The Graduate Center is home to nearly 50 Ph.D. and masters programs, 16 of them in STEM-related fields, and encompasses a state-of-the-art Advanced Science Research Center.
The Science Writer will write news stories, profiles, and occasionally press releases about researchers and their discoveries in a wide range of areas: neuroscience, astrophysics, photonics, nanoscience, biochemistry, environmental science, data science, psychology, audiology, and more. The Science Writer will also cover personal and professional achievements of faculty, students, and alumni, including awards, grants, and promotions.
The ideal candidate will have a love for science and a respect for academic research and be well versed in conveying complex ideas and the excitement of science to non-scientists.
The Science Writer will report to the Director of Communications and will be an integral member of the Graduate Centers Communications and Marketing team, which is committed to positioning the Graduate Center as a premier institution for graduate education. This position has a maximum of 225 hours for the Fall semester, 225 hours for the Spring semester, and 175 hours for the Summer semester. The job may be performed remotely or on site; the incumbent must live within the commutable distance of the New York City Metro area which includes parts of New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.
Duties include but are not limited to:
* Report on and write engaging stories about faculty, student, and alumni scholarship and achievements in the sciences and social sciences, including news articles, interviews, profiles, explainers, and occasionally press releases; Occasionally write about other topics.
* Copy edit, fact check, and proofread articles and content.
* Thoroughly research all stories and pitch story ideas.
* Attend weekly editorial meetings to share updates, ideas, and review planned content.
* Exercise the utmost professionalism in communicating with faculty, students, alumni, staff, and partners.
* Handle sensitive topics and work matters with confidentiality and discretion.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**
Bachelor's Degree required.
**OTHER QUALIFICATIONS**
* Bachelor's degree, preferably in the natural sciences.
* 5 years of related professional experience in journalism or writing.
* Experience writing journalistic articles about the natural sciences, including the life sciences and physical sciences, for lay audiences.
* Excellent writing skills and exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
* Excellent news judgement, with superior fact-checking skills and strong attention to detail.
* Demonstrated success with writing a variety of science-related news content, including short stories, longer features, profiles, and interviews.
* Ability to work collaboratively and in partnership with editors and researchers.
* Knowledge of academic research.
* Ability to work in a dynamic and flexible environment with changing requirements and the ability to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple projects
* Basic familiarity with Web metrics and SEO is a plus.
**COMPENSATION**
$52.74/hr
